How to buy a cord without getting shorted
- Ask for a full cord, in cubic feet. If the seller quotes a face cord or a rick, ask what length the pieces are cut to. Without that number the quote cannot be compared to anything.
- Ask what species. A cord of oak holds roughly twice the heat of a cord of cottonwood. Mixed hardwood is a legitimate product but price it as the cheap end of the mix.
- Ask when it was split. Seasoned should mean split and stacked for at least six months, not felled six months ago. Wood dries from the split face, not through the bark.
- Ask what delivery costs and whether stacking is included. Both are commonly extra.
- Stack it, then measure it. Height times length times depth in feet, divided by 128. Use thecord calculator.
Seasoned, green or kiln dried
Green wood is freshly cut and can be half water by weight. It is cheap because you are buying the seller's inventory problem: you will store it for a year before it burns well. Seasoned has been split and stacked long enough to reach roughly 20 percent moisture. Kiln dried has been dried in a heated chamber, which also kills pests, and carries a premium of roughly 30 to 60 percent.
If you have somewhere dry to store wood, buying green in spring is the cheapest route by a wide margin. If you need to burn it this month, pay for kiln dried and do not let anyone sell you green wood as seasoned. A moisture meter costs less than a face cord.

How much does a cord of firewood cost?
Nationally, a full cord of seasoned hardwood typically runs $200 to $400 delivered, with kiln dried running higher and softwood in the West running lower. The figure is genuinely local, because a cord weighs over two tons and freight dominates the price. Check the city page for your area, then run the quote through the cost calculator.
Why do you not compare firewood prices between suppliers?
Because there is nothing to compare. Firewood is quoted by phone, per delivery, adjusted for distance, species and what the yard has cut that week. No supplier publishes a price list that stays fixed, so any site presenting a firewood price ranking is publishing numbers it cannot support.
Can I bring firewood from another state?
Usually you should not, and often you legally cannot. Emerald ash borer, oak wilt and other pests travel in firewood, and most states restrict moving untreated wood out of quarantine counties. The standard guidance is to buy within 50 miles of where you burn, or to buy certified heat treated wood if you must move it further.
How long does firewood take to season?
Six months to a year for most species split and stacked off the ground under cover, and closer to two years for dense oak. Climate matters: the same stack seasons faster in Denver than in Houston, because humidity slows drying. Split it, stack it single row with airflow, and cover the top only.
