What the spread tells you
The gap between the cheapest and dearest ton in the table is $320, in the same season, in overlapping regions. That is not a quality gradient. Softwood premium brands genuinely cost more to make than hardwood blends, but nothing about the product explains a spread that wide.
What explains it is freight and retail model. Yards close to the mills in Maine, Pennsylvania and the Great Lakes buy in volume and turn stock quickly. Stove dealers carry pellets as a convenience for install customers and price for the margin, not the volume. The practical conclusion for a buyer: call three suppliers within your delivery radius before assuming the brand you know is the cheap option.
Buying by the pallet
Pellets are sold as 40 lb bags, 50 to a ton, shrink wrapped on a pallet. Single bags from a hardware store shelf always cost more per pound, and the gap widens in midwinter when shelves run thin. Work out how many tons your season takes with theconsumption calculator, then buy them in spring.

How much do wood pellets cost per ton?
In our supplier audit, listed prices ranged from $290 to $610 per ton, with a median of $380. That is product only, before delivery. The spread is driven more by which supplier you buy from than by which brand you buy.
Why is the same brand cheaper at one supplier than another?
Because pellet retail is a regional business with no national price discipline. A yard near a mill buys freight cheap and passes some of it on. A stove shop in a metro area carries the brand as a service to its install customers and prices it accordingly. Freight is the largest single variable, which is why prices rise the further you get from the mills.
Do these prices include delivery?
No. Every figure here is the product price as listed. Delivery is quoted separately and most suppliers do not publish a rate at all. On a $300 ton, a $90 delivery fee is 30 percent, so a table sorted on product price alone would be misleading. Always ask for the delivered price before comparing.
Is this a national price index?
No, and we will not present it as one. The suppliers who publish readable prices cluster in the Northeast and Great Lakes. Several of the largest national retailers either block automated access or require a zip code before showing anything, so a genuinely national index cannot be built from public data.
When is the best time to buy pellets?
Spring and summer. Demand for pellets peaks in January and bottoms out in June, and pricing follows the same curve. Buying your season supply in the off season is the largest saving available to a pellet burner, and it costs nothing but the storage space.
